Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — Houston, TX
Common questions from homeowners in Houston and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
How often does a dryer vent in Houston actually need clearing?
Once a year covers most households. Families doing laundry daily, or anyone drying pet bedding and heavy towels, usually need it closer to every eight months. Our humidity works against you here: with dew points in the 70s from May through September, lint sticks to damp duct walls instead of blowing out the hood. Add spring oak and pine pollen, summer Saharan dust, and the construction dust that never stops in a teardown-and-rebuild city, and the duct loads up faster than it would in a dry climate.

What are the warning signs of a clogged vent?
The clearest one is a load that used to dry in one cycle and now takes two or three. Feel the clothes when the cycle ends. Hot and damp means the moisture had nowhere to go. Check the exterior hood while the dryer runs; weak airflow or none at all is a blockage. A burnt or musty smell in the laundry room, a dryer cabinet that is hot to the touch, and lint showing up around the door seal all point the same direction.

Walk me through the job from the time you arrive.
We check airflow at the hood first so there is a before number to compare against. Then the dryer gets pulled out and disconnected, and the transition hose behind it is inspected, since that is where most crushed-duct problems hide. A rotating brush on a flexible rod runs the full duct from inside while a vacuum captures what comes loose, and we clear the exterior hood and flapper by hand. The dryer goes back, we run it, and we measure airflow again so you can see the difference.

How long should I set aside for the appointment?
A single-story ranch between 610 and Beltway 8 with a short side-wall run is usually done in under an hour. Two-story subdivision homes where the laundry sits upstairs and the duct climbs through the wall take longer, often an hour and a half. Three-story townhomes on narrow infill lots are the slowest, because the run is tall and frequently roof-terminated. If we find a nest, a disconnected joint, or crushed flex duct, we tell you what it adds before we keep going.

What makes one dryer vent cost more than another?
Length and height of the run drive it more than anything. A bungalow inside the Loop with the dryer on an exterior wall is the simplest job we do. A three-story townhome with a roof termination means ladder work and a vent we have to reach from above, and that is a different job entirely. Elbows add friction and cleaning time, an attic-routed duct means working in a vented space that hits 130-140°F in summer, and replacing crushed flex or a broken hood flapper is parts and labor on top. We look at the actual run, explain what it needs, and give you the number in writing before anything starts.

Is it the vent or is the dryer itself failing?
Pull the duct off the back of the dryer and run a short cycle with the exhaust dumping straight into the room. If the drum heats normally and clothes dry, the machine is fine and the duct is restricted. If it still runs cold or still takes forever with nothing attached, you are looking at a heating element, thermal fuse, or blower wheel, and that is an appliance repair call. A blown thermal fuse is often caused by a blocked vent in the first place, so clearing the duct is worth doing either way. We will tell you straight if the problem is not ours.

Why does rigid metal duct beat flexible duct?
Rigid metal has smooth walls, so lint keeps moving instead of catching. Flexible foil and plastic accordion duct is full of ridges that grab lint, and it sags, kinks, and gets crushed the moment the dryer is pushed back against the wall. We see a lot of white vinyl flex behind dryers in older ranch homes, and it should come out. It is not rated for dryer exhaust heat. The right setup is rigid metal for the concealed run with a short listed metal transition connector at the dryer. If yours is flex, we will show you what it looks like and what replacing it involves.

What happens if there's a bird or rodent nest in my vent?
It is common here, especially on hoods with a missing or stuck flapper. Nesting material packs the last few feet of duct solid, and a brush alone will not move it. We remove it from the exterior end, clear the remaining duct, and check whether anything is still living in there before we close it up. Then we fit a proper hood with a working damper and a guard that keeps birds out without trapping lint behind a screen. Mesh screens on a dryer hood are the wrong answer and we do not install them.

My duct run is too long. Can it be shortened or helped along?
Sometimes yes. On a slab-on-grade home with attic access, we can often reroute to a closer exterior wall or roof point and cut several elbows out of the path, which helps more than people expect since every elbow counts against the allowable length. When rerouting is not practical, usually in a townhome where the laundry sits in the middle of the floor plan, an inline booster fan with a lint-tolerant design is the alternative. Boosters need their own cleaning schedule, so we only recommend one when the geometry leaves no better option. We measure the run and tell you which path makes sense.

Can you come out today, and how far do you travel?
We hold slots open each day for same-day work, and mornings usually have the most room. We cover Houston and the surrounding upper Texas Gulf Coast communities on the flat coastal prairie roughly 50 miles inland from Galveston Bay, including the bungalow blocks inside the Loop, the ranch belt between 610 and Beltway 8, the newer two-story subdivisions farther out, and townhome rows near Buffalo, Brays, White Oak and Greens bayous. Since the cooling season here runs March through November, our schedule stays full most of the year, so calling earlier in the day helps. Tell us the home type and where the dryer sits and we will give you a realistic arrival window.
