Rerouting a dryer vent in Houston

Laundry rooms moved upstairs in Houston's 1990s–2020s two-stories. That buys a 20–40 ft attic run with two to four elbows ending at a roof jack. Slab ranch homes get the opposite: a 4–10 ft side-wall run through brick or Hardie. Rerouting usually trades the long path for the short one.

The job is about geometry more than parts. Every elbow eats allowable length. We look for a nearer exterior wall and a straighter line. Rigid metal, strapped, no bellies between supports. Joints taped, not screwed. Screws inside a duct catch lint and build a plug.

Local reasons to move a run: sagging attic flex holds condensate, and lint cements into damp mats at the roof jack. Pollen-bound lint jams flappers and screened wall hoods. Dryer sheet residue plus humidity leaves a varnish-like film. Roof-terminated runs need attention every 6–9 months instead of 12.

Some runs cannot move. Three-story townhomes and mid-rise condos use a vertical chase, and the chase is the path. Garage-corner dryers may not discharge into the garage or attic. Manufactured homes vent out the skirting or rim, limited by underfloor clearance.

After a reroute, check it yourself. The hood damper should swing fully open. Towels should finish in one cycle.
